Core centre of Amsterdam’s urban development

Purmerend has ambitions! From a small town in North-Holland to an established metropolis as part of the Metropole Regio Amsterdam. As a city with ambitions, Purmerend aims to experience quite the transformation within the upcoming 20 years.

Purmerend has already become a core centre of Amsterdam’s urban development, and harbours a great amount of attraction. People like living in Purmerend because it has everything that a medium-sized city should have on offer: a historical city centre, a theatre, a vibrant square, a hospital, several schools and plenty of sports facilities. Its location close to Amsterdam, combined with its green backdrop of meadows, Unesco heritages and famous ‘polders’, makes Purmerend one of a kind.

The demand for housing in Purmerend is huge, especially among the youth and elderly. To meet this demand, and to keep the city accessible and attractive, a lot of investments are being made.

Agenda 2040

Since 2016 Purmerend has started an ambitious and broad development plan for the city, called ‘Agenda 2040’. An important element of this plan is the addition of 10.000 homes. To attain this goal, redevelopment within the city – and especially in the train station areas – is essential. It’s these areas that are interesting for all ages; a central location, close to the necessary facilities and easily accessible by public transport.

In the space surrounding the train stations and inner city, the developments will focus on high-rise and mixed-use – working and living in one area. These areas offer room for around 4000 residencies, combined with offices, stores and other facilities. Sustainability is warranted through district heating, and bundled spatial developments ensure that the area is highly accessible. The proximity of the school campus and PurmerValley also creates a great incubator for young talent.

Another crucial aspect of this future deveopment is the fusion of the historical inner city with these urban train station areas. Combining this leads to a new, bigger city centre which stimulates the transformation from old to new – exactly as envisioned when thinking of the Purmerend of the future.
