Amsterdam New Construction Award for Eerste Oosterparkstraat 88-126

Published on 23-06-2020
The project, at Eerste Oosterparkstraat 88-126, has this year lived the Amsterdam New Construction Price. With twenty percent of the votes, other new construction projects such as the Pontsteiger and the Steltloper are behind.

The Amsterdam New Construction Prize is the public prize for new construction in Amsterdam and was awarded for the twelfth time this year. In recent weeks, Amsterdammers have been able to vote for their favorite project. More than 7,500 people voted. Alderman Laurens Ivens and Fries Heinis, general director Bouwend Nederland, presented the prize on Friday.

Historically responsible new construction
The Eerste Oosterparkstraat 88-126 project is a so-called 'renovation project'. Nedstede purchased it in February 2019 from housing association Stadgenoot. The project was to upgrade the street, including a crowd-puller in the form of a 1000 m2 supermarket. The existing, late nineteenth-century buildings were not suitable for this. They were too low, too narrow and too small, but the neighborhood and politicians didn't want to demolish them. The choice was therefore made for historically sound new construction that fits in with the character of the street.
This resulted in the rebuilding of the existing buildings. During demolition, old elements were preserved for reuse, such as façade anchors, balcony fences and natural stone ornaments. 39 social rental homes, a supermarket of approx. 1,000 m2 and six shops were realized.

"This is a wonderful project that you hardly notice that it is new construction," said Alderman Ivens after the presentation. The buildings seem to have been there since 1900 and have only been freshened up. Local residents are well involved in the plans and the results are impressive. ”

Nedstede CEO Michael van de Kuit is pleasantly surprised with winning the public award: “It is very nice that the public has chosen this project as the most beautiful new construction project of the past year. We have done our best to make it an attractive shopping complex, without losing sight of the original character of the buildings and the street scene. Thank you for being recognized and appreciated. ”

“We wanted to build real Amsterdam homes here,” says Patrick Barské of Stadgenoot. “And we did that, completely in the style of the beautiful Oosterpark neighborhood. It had to be houses that were built with craftsmanship. And homes that are appreciated by the people who live there: our tenants. That was our commitment and we succeeded. ”

This edition of the Amsterdam New Construction Prize concerned new construction projects that were completed in Amsterdam between August 2018 and August 2019. In the first round, a public jury of 137 Amsterdammers from fifty new construction projects nominated the ten most appealing. Those ten projects participated in the final. Everyone could vote for his or her favorite project via In total, nearly 7,500 people voted. That is almost forty percent more than last year.
