Amsterdam wants to build 1,700 homes on the Draka site

Published on 08-10-2020
1.700 new homes, a primary school and commercial buildings will be built on the former Draka site in Amsterdam. The municipality is now preparing the investments and the zoning plan. The council is expected to decide on this in 2021. The construction of the first houses will then start in 2022/23. Amsterdam concluded an agreement for this with Draka Kabel B.V, the owner of the land, according to the municipal website.

Until 2016, the site in Noord was the site of the Hollandsche Wire and Cable Factories (DraKa), founded in 1910. This historic spot on the water, right opposite Java Island, offers many opportunities. With 53,000 m2, it is large enough for 1,700 homes, lots of greenery and business spaces for the current entrepreneurs of the site, the Hamerkwartier and other entrepreneurs.

Lively
The area will soon form a lively link between the Vliegenbos and the IJplein. This area will also attract residents from the surrounding neighborhoods, such as the Vogelbuurt.

Oeverpark and other parks
A park will be built on the water: a 50-meter wide boulevard. The municipality will create this park, just like the streets, squares and other parks. Hines and Provast, who will develop the new building, are the intended buyers of the area and have drawn up an urban development plan. They are going to build almost energy-neutral.

Conditions
In 2009 the city council established a pre-emptive right (right of first purchase) on a large part of the Hamerkwartier area. We have attached conditions to the sale of the land, such as the program and the urban development plan.

How further?
The municipality is now preparing the investments and the zoning plan. The council is expected to decide on this in 2021. The construction of the first homes will then start in 2022/23.

Participation
The plan is part of the future plans for the Hamerkwartier. Many responses to those plans have already been received. In some time, the municipality of Amsterdam will organize the participation in the investment plan.
