The area around Amstel station offers space for a maximum of 2,100 new homes

In the western part of the area around the Amstel station in Amsterdam East there is room for 1,300 to 2,100 new homes. This is evident from the draft urban plan presented on Friday. There is room for high-rise buildings at the station. The municipality is thinking of towers up to a maximum height of 135 meters.

In addition to a mixed housing program with social rent, medium-rent and private sector homes, the planning area between the Amstel station and the Amstel offers space for 37,000 m2 to 94,000 m2 of offices and 7,500 m2 of facilities. High-rise - five slim towers from 75 to 135 meters high - makes it possible, according to responsible alderman Van Doorninck, to make the area greener. The intention is to realize around 15,000 m2 of new greenery.

"We are working on a completely new neighborhood," said the alderman. "By creating a lot of new greenery in the area, it not only makes it more attractive to stay, but we also prevent heat stress." The building plans are being executed in collaboration with the owners of the existing buildings: Amstelvista, Leeuwenburg and the owner of the Delta Lloyd location. Construction is expected to start in 2022.
The Van der Kunbuurt has a special status. Stadgenoot is talking to the residents of the neighborhood about the future of outdated social rental housing. The corporation would like to replace the half-storey houses from the 1950s with new-builds and add affordable housing. Two years ago, Stadgenoot already took the decision to at least keep the social rental housing along the Amstel. The municipality has drawn up the urban plan in such a way that preservation of the entire Van der Kunbuurt is also possible.
